What is benzoyl peroxide?

Written by Lindsey Mcilvena

This over-the-counter product can be a great place to start in treating acne.

Benzoyl peroxide is a common topical bactericidal agent, meaning it kills bacteria by damaging them in a way similar to bleach. It can also help break down and loosen up some of the keratin (a part of your skin)  that blocks pores, which may also help reduce acne.

It can be somewhat irritating to the skin, can bleach clothes, and cause some other side effects, so make sure to read all the information provided in the manufacturer's pamphlet about it. You can typically find it over the counter, and it’s a good place to start with a DIY acne treatment.
